How to Switch in 5 Easy Steps

Most customers complete the switch in one day. Here’s exactly what to do.

Contact Your Current Provider

Call your current monitoring company (ADT, Vivint, Brinks, etc.) and request to cancel your monitoring service. Specifically ask them to release your Alarm.com account so the cellular module becomes unregistered.

Important: Some providers may try to keep your account active or offer retention deals. Be firm. You own your equipment. They must release your Alarm.com module upon request. If they give you trouble, call us at 743-253-7867 and we’ll help.

Check Your System Compatibility

Once your current provider releases the module (usually 24-48 hours), go to our Compatibility Checker and enter your panel’s IMEI number. We’ll verify instantly that your system is ready for Alertor.

Will I lose my automation rules and settings?
If your current provider cooperates with a dealer-to-dealer transfer through Alarm.com, your existing automation rules, scenes, and settings can be preserved. If they release the module instead, you’ll set up fresh on your new Alertor account. Either way, your physical equipment stays exactly the same.
Can my current provider refuse to release my equipment?
No. You own your equipment. They are obligated to release the Alarm.com cellular module upon your request. However, some providers may delay the process. If you’re having trouble, call us at 743-253-7867 and we’ll assist.
How long does the switch take?
Once your current provider releases the module, activation with Alertor takes minutes for self-service plans. The release from your current provider typically takes 24-48 hours but can be up to 2-3 business days for dealer-to-dealer transfers.
Do I need a technician to come to my house?
No. If your existing equipment is compatible (most panels made after 2010 are), you can switch entirely online. No physical changes are needed. If you need help, call us at 743-253-7867 and our team can walk you through setup.
What if I still have a contract with my current provider?
You’ll need to check your current contract terms. Some providers charge an early termination fee. Even with that fee, switching to Alertor often saves money within a few months due to our lower monthly rates. We recommend calculating the break-even point.
Will I use the same Alarm.com app?
Yes. Alertor uses the same Alarm.com platform as ADT, Vivint, Brinks, and other major providers. You’ll download (or keep) the same Alarm.com app on your phone. The only difference is who manages your account and how much you pay.
Is there a gap in monitoring during the switch?
There may be a brief period (hours to 1-2 days) between when your old provider deactivates and when Alertor activates. Your panel’s local alarm (siren) still works during this time. We recommend coordinating the timing to minimize any gap.
